The university in brief
In 1984 a group of like-minded visionaries headed by Shri R. L. Jalappa, champion of the co-operative movement of Karnataka, established the Sri Devaraj Urs Educational Trust for Backward Classes to focus on medical education and social service. Through Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College — started at Tamaka, Kolar in 1986 — the Trust sought to make a significant contribution to medical education, research and health care for the rural population.
The campus sits in Tamaka village on National Highway 75, five kilometres from Kolar town and 75 km from Bengaluru, with Bangarpet junction 15 km away — well connected by road, rail and air.
Following a UGC inspection in April 2007, the Ministry of Human Resource Development conferred deemed-to-be-university status on 25 May 2007, in the name and style of Sri Devaraj Urs Academy of Higher Education and Research.
Quality came first: NAAC accreditation and ISO 9001 certification in 2006, NABL accreditation for the hospital laboratory services, and NABH full accreditation for R. L. Jalappa Hospital & Research Centre in 2022. Since 2007 the university has steadily added academic and administrative departments befitting its mandate.
